The Red-Yellow-GREEN Of Exercise Pt. 3 of 3
Today we look at seven tips for effective exercise when in the green zone of my total score column of the How To Eat, Move and Be Healthy! health appraisal questionnaires.
I begin by reviewing the importance of being aware of the “tai-chi” of how yin and yang energies flow in the body, and how your choices affect the 3 primary hormones (Adrenaline, Cortisol, and Insulin).
I then take you on a tour of seven key tips that are important for long-term performance in the green zone.
These are all very important tips for anyone that is physically active at even the daily minimum of 30:00 all the way up to the most elite of athletes.

Mike Salemi Tapers For A Shot At Russian Masters 40KG Class!
Mike and I have nearly completed the journey to his next shot at the very hard to achieve Russian Masters qualification in the 40 Kg class.
Mike needs to get 27 reps of the clean-n-jerk with a pair of 40 Kg kettlebells in 5:00 without letting the kettlebells touch the ground.
Each rep is graded by an eagle-eyed judge and a pair of 40 Kg bells is not an easy date for 5:00 of non-stop action!
In fact, when Mike achieves his target of 27+ reps, he will be the first North American to do so.
I’ve trained a lot of athletes for some very tough competitions in my career, but this completion is right up there with the most brutal of challenges for any athlete.
Mike has been diligent with all aspects of his training and self-management, and made it through the most challenging week of training yet as we headed into our taper period.
Mike feels great and is ready to give it all he’s got this Saturday in Oakland, Ca.

A Tarantula Visits My Gym
Angie and I were working out in the gym Thursday and when she went to grab a piece of equipment, she was met by a lovely, large tarantula.
We took our time getting it to climb onto something so we could put it outside and eventually, we gave it safe transport.
You can see this lovely creature in the video clip above. It is always fun to get visits from Mother Nature.
SHOW-N-TELL: Recent Art and Exercise
Saturday, Angie and I spent some time painting together.
This is Angie’s beautiful painting of a shaman dreaming life into existence. Personally, I love this painting. I think the reason Angie can capture the essence of the shaman so well is because shamanism is woven into her genes.
She has a very powerful connection to nature and Mother Earth, and it seems that creatures love to visit and be with her wherever she goes, including the gym!
The word “Mana” means life-force, the essence of life in Hawaiian, and among the native New Zealand Maori’s, Mana means “Sacred.”
I had this vision recently while meditating on Mana. Here, Mana is expressed as the feminine essence of life, creating, and being created by the co-creative spirit of Mother Earth and the stars.
Angie and I were both tuned into Mana, the essence of life as we painted. When we finished and put the two paintings together, a beautiful story unfolded.
The Shaman is seeing the inner-light reflected back from the walls of the cave she’s in, and her dream is reaching into the stars to create sacred life. We always have the greatest time painting and encourage all of you to play with color, expressing your creativity.
We live in a world today that is over-burdened with intellectualism, rules, regulations, schedules, expectations, and leaves little time to be one with the spirit within.
When we create art, we add life to life; we become creators and learn that we do have creative power and that our imagination and intuition often guide us through our creative expressions, much the way dreams do.
Healing art therapy is an important element of the therapy I offer my patients and clients, and it has done wonders to help heal addictions, fear-based thinking, and “open the head to the miracles of life in the Universe.”
If you are feeling challenged in your life right now, try letting go of expectations and just let whatever wants out of you out.
Don’t worry about how perfect or beautiful it is. Simply allow yourself to be “relieved” of the tension, and pressure that is in you, knowing that allowing that challenging energy to be the impetus for imagination and intuitive expression is freeing, and beautiful.
You may not see, or understand the messages you are leaving yourself in your own art, but don’t worry, just keep coming back to the art you create from time to time, and soon enough, you will see clues that you’ve left for yourself.
You may see them after the fact, but that’s great too because you will learn what to look for in the present moment to better understand your past and your potential for an amazing future.
I came to work Sunday to do some catch-up work because I had a very busy week and couldn’t meet all my objectives.
After a few hours of work, some great reading, and a lovely breakfast of sausage, eggs, beans and kimchee, I headed out to lift stones in my stone circle.
One of the three stacks I’d previously build got knocked down, either by wind, bird or animal, so I decided that was my notice that it was time for some more creativity.
I took the big stack that was in front and broke it down, and placed all the
stones from the stacks in the circle. I left the big one in the center because I quite enjoy it and it is very stable. I set a timer for 45:00 and was able to take down the stacks I wanted to transform, clean up the circle, and build the one you now see in the front in the allotted time.
After I finished, I felt fantastic! Stonework is amazing for balancing the musculoskeletal system, activating the balance mechanisms of the body, and keeping you in touch with the earth. I love it!
Give it a try! Start small and take your time.
Remember Paul Chek’s stonework dictum… “NEVER rush in a rock garden!” and you’ll be fine.
Those of you with testosterone driven behavior should stand warned that being too aggressive can easily result in serious injury, so if you are going to work with stones, practice emphasizing your yin/feminine qualities.
Trust me on this…there is a lot of blood on the ground and the stones in my two yards where I do my stonework because my macho got the best of me! Gravity always wins!!
